How much energy is needed...?

Our world needs energy. But just how much? A brief overview from the crawling snail to the launching rocket. Some figures are rough estimates and not universally valid.

1 joule is needed to lift a bar of chocolate (100g) one metre high. If you eat the chocolate, you get 2.7 million joules.

A snail needs 0.04 joules to crawl one metre.

250 million joules are needed to drive 100 kilometres in a petrol-powered car, and around a fifth as much in an electric car, meaning 54 million joules.
