Miguel Ariza is one of four UniBE Venture Fellows 2023. The biomedical engineer is working on a novel treatment method for the eye disease keratoconus in the Computational Bioengineering research group of Philippe Büchler at the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research. In affected patients, the outermost layer of the eye - the cornea - thins and deforms. If left untreated, this disease leads to loss of vision and even blindness.

In his new approach, Miguel Ariza uses a combination of software information and physical treatment to provide corneal surgeons with a reliable treatment method in the future.

Ariza chose Bern as the location for his project because innovations in the healthcare sector are promoted through the close cooperation between the University of Bern, the Inselspital, sitem-insel and the Canton of Bern.
